Stefan West is an indie rock artist from the east coast of Australia. Growing up listening to the pop punk bands of the 90s and 2000s, he developed a low-key obsession with Blink-182 after seeing them at the first gig he ever went to. He has used music to overcome his struggles with mental health and substance abuse, along with yoga and other health and wellness practices. West tries to tell as much truth as possible in his lyrics, and musically collaborating with his best friend Aaron Schembri who writes guitar parts and vocal harmonies on all the tracks. Stefan’s album ‘Cambridge’ is expected towards the end of 2024, possibly the early months of ’25. Until its full release, West has a huge year planned with 7 singles on the way after his latest track ‘Slow Down World’, which hit all streaming platforms on March 15.
‘Slow Down World’ comes in hot, starting right off with some provocative lyrics delivered by Stefan’s emotional vocal style. The guitar compliments nicely, adding a beautiful background to the poignant words. The chorus kicks it into full steam with all instruments driving forward with a fun and uplifting energy. Influences of several genres blend together creating a familiar but unique sound. The lyrics read like lines from a diary, showing Stefan’s courage in sharing these deep thoughts and feelings. He steps up in a big way to give people with similar feelings something strong to connect to.
In the Stefan’s own words, “‘Slow Down World’ is about when self help goes to far. It’s about trying absolutely everything that you hear might make you feel better, but you still feel stuck. It’s about trying your absolute best and it still not feeling good enough and just needing the world to slow down for a moment to catch your breath, because every moment feels like you’re on the verge of crumbling”
During the COVID pandemic, Stefan collaborated with Schembri to produce the unique guitar, bass rhythms and the vocal harmonies. A horn section featuring Stefan’s own father, adds a personal touch to this powerful musical narrative, enhancing the song.
The track has a fun and rhythmic bounce that works perfectly with its incredibly catchy and sing-along style chorus. The horns give it a gigantic sound, while the vocal harmonies are tastefully sprinkled in to lift the melody up in all the right places. Brilliantly produced and mixed by Chris Gatz at GM Sound Studios and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering, it’s a classic pop rock song, with moving and impressively honest lyrics.
