Floral Empire – “Take My Love Away”

Floral Empire is an indie rock/soul band from Portland, Oregon. The band was started in a Northwest Portland warehouse by lead vocalist Nick Grant and lead guitarist Jered Pound. After several months of writing and playing music together, the two dubbed themselves Floral Empire in November of 2017 and added drummer Donovan Cassell and producer/bassist Aeython Raabon. They currently have two singles streaming on Spotify with plans to release a full album in June of 2018.

“Take My Love Away” is an upbeat poppy song that is booming with positive energy and unique personality. The track begins with a playful voice over introducing the group; a surf style guitar plays a 4-chord melody that sets the table for the rest of the band to jump in. They play with different tempos and time signatures between the verse and the chorus, keeping the song fun and engaging. The instrumentation also blends styles of 50’s sounding guitars with a ska/punk rhythm section set to a soulful melody. The thing that really sticks out is the lead vocalists sound and the cool attitude in which he delivers the lyrics. There is a heartfelt and earnest vibe that each member plays with, all of them unifying to form a very concise sound and style. This is a summertime feel good anthem that mixes old school musical sentiments with a youthful energy.
