The Impersonators – “Broken Snow”

The Impersonators formed in 2013 when Tommi Tikka, the other half of Finnish pop/rock band Carmen Gray’s songwriting team, joined forces with lyricist Antti Autio to write some new songs. With this particular group, Tikka wanted to have complete artistic control over the songs he recorded, a different approach than the work Carmen Grayrecorded for major labels. For most of 2014, Tikka auditioned musicians for the new group, ultimately deciding to play all the parts himself. With that decision, The Impersonators became a group of two songwriters – with Antti in charge of the lyrics and Tommi in charge of the music. Their goal is to nurture and cultivate the creativity, spirit, and warmth that graced the pop records of yesteryears. In their own words, “The best way to describe the sound of The Impersonators is to call it sixties-flavored “alternative pop/rock”. In March of 2018, The Impersonators released the video for their song, “Burning Blue”. They are back with their new single released August 17, 2018 titled “Broken Snow”.

“Broken Snow” begins with a mellow wave of multi-layered instruments that set a calm and thoughtful tone for the song. The spacey guitars create a wide soundscape while other instruments pick through a bright melody. The vocals kick in with enthusiasm and soul, the chord structures have the movement of an old love song mixed with a modern, digitally artistic sound. The first section of the song steadily builds energy into the gigantic pop anthem chorus that kicks over the top with punchy crashing drums and thick vocal harmonies creating an invigorating sing along. A melodic wall of strings adds to the unique sound and gives an epic classical feel to the songs straightforward pop-rock backbone. They drop into a deep and moody bridge section that is driven forward by a chunky guitar while a muddy and phasing vocal track keeps the musical sensibility going. They come out of this darker moment with a bright and beautiful section led by a soaring guitar. When the band hits the final chorus the size of the sound is three times larger that when they started, perfectly leading their song from its beginning to it’s final peak. The string sections and vocals light up with jovial celebration while the rhythm section playfully drops out the beat for a moment to make the hits really land. This is a perfectly structured track that mixes modern experimental tones with a classic pop feel.
