Mallsex – “End Trails”

Mallsex is a Vancouver, Canada- based post-punk band formed in 2018 that combines synthesizers, noise, shoegaze, dark wave and art-punk influences. The 3-piece band is made up of guitarist Stuart Galloway and Sean Kenny both handling vocals and synths, and Esme Mair on percussion. In 2018 they released their debut LP “Discreet Services” which went on to chart on college radio stations across North America for 20 consecutive weeks. Rodney Anonymous of the Dead Milkmen has “Discreet Services” in his ‘Best of’ 2018 list. On October 31, 2019 Mallsex released their second full length LP “Live in Reverse”. The band describes the album as “…what happens when you toss the Pixies in a blender with an qual measure of Preoccupations, blast it on high, and then light it on fire.” The first single off of “Live in Reverse” is the track “End Trails”.

“End Trails” begins with a steady and high-energy beat that wastes no time getting you into the trance. The punky guitars add an attitude to the electronic backbone of the rhythm, giving a rock n roll feeling to the track. The vocals have a haunting quality to them with droning harmonies joining in occasionally, matching the low rumble of the synthesizers. The tone shifts into a more uplifting sound when the band shifts into the chorus, maintaining the unique mysterious vibe with interesting chord changes and melody. The instrumentation blends genres and styles, mixing techno dance beats with soaring guitars and arpeggiated futuristic keyboard tones. The band uses the Pixies-esque loud quiet loud format going from a tight and percussive verse to a giant sounding chorus and epic instrumental breakdowns, giving the track and eclectic array of energies and sounds. They have their own unique sound that is full of personality and a cool atmosphere, being artistic and original without losing a straightforward approach that anyone can grab on to.
