Mosquito Cabaret – “River King”

Mosquito Cabaret is a folk/world music group based in Norfolk, Virginia. Their music draws inspiration from the harvest dances of Thessalonika, the tango grooves of Seville, and the funeral dirges of Louisiana. The 5 piece band is made up of Julian Ku on vocals, Miles Hoyle on accordion, Devon Gronka playing bass, Daniel Deskins on saxophone and clarinet, and Michael Morgan holding down the drums and percussion. On October 11, 2017 Mosquito Cabaret released their official debut single, “River King”

“River King” starts with a flurry of instruments setting a quirky yet haunting tone before the upbeat melody kicks in. Right from the start, the sound of the accordion gives you the sense that this is music from another time. The mix of instruments and styles gives this track a classy and fun feel while the drums keep the energy pumping. The lyrics tell the River King, the story of a man born in a bookshop and raised on a barge in the sand. The chorus is celebratory and exciting and the following instrumental refrains are dramatic and displays how tight and well tuned the band is. The song pushes and pulls between fast and slow tempos painting a vivid picture and taking you through the peaks and valleys of the story all with expertly precise instrumentation.
