Phil Circle – “What I Mean”

Chicago based singer/ songwriter Phil Circle has always pursued his career on his own terms. He has self released his music and booked his own shows, deciding on specific venues that would suit his style and appreciate his work. Through this and extensive radio play on stations supporting independent talent, Circle has built a strong following with his original and eclectic work. In The Mix hailed Phil’s debut release in the 90s as “just what the doctor ordered”, and they pointed out that his music “defies rock, jazz and blues” saying his songs were “from the master class.” 20 years later, Illinois Entertainer referred to his latest full band effort as proof that Phil is “one of our town’s most unique voices.” Phil has also recently put our a book titled The Outback Musician’s Survival Guide: One Guy’s Story of Surviving as an Independent Musician.

November 2017 saw the release of Phil’s single “What I Mean”, an emotional song that Circle describes as a “somewhat anthemic tune, it departs a bit from more bluesy progressive folk sound, but it’s a song of hope.” It begins with an emotive acoustic guitar setting the mellow mood, and is joined by beautiful piano and a tight backbeat when the verse begins. It has the classic feel of an anthem for a road weary troubadour, with lyrics that pint to hope and optimism and a spirit determined to keep going. The chord structures and different turns the melody takes are engaging, setting the stage for many dramatic and wonderful moments. The sound grows bigger and bigger as the song progresses and reaches a fulfilling and poignant end.
