Breakers are a alt-rock group out of Charlottesville, Virginia. Their music is a riff-driven, proto-punk that blends compositional formats with straightforward raw rock n’ roll style. The four-piece band is comprised of guitarist and vocalist Lucas Brown, Vicente Arroyo on drums, guitarist Vince Tarrance, and Alex Angelich on bass and vocals. WHURK Magazine said “Breakers inhabits a space somewhere in between the raw, yet slickly produced height of grunge and peak classic rock proficiency…At points, the guitar riffs turn down carnivalesque avenues, only to build back up as punchy punk ragers or soaring face-melters…” 2017 saw the release of their first album “In Search of and Exit”. On September 14th Breakers followed up with their 12-track album “Rewrite”.
The title track on “Rewrite” kicks off the album with steady energy and melodic presence. The opening guitar has a gritty aggressive flavor that strums a poppy tempo before the full band kicks in the fill out the sound. The lead vocals have a mellow swagger and looseness that reflects the relaxed attitude and angst of good rock n’ roll. The band plucks along, each filling out the melody with their individual phrases that adds up into one solid bouncing harmonious tune. The chorus has momentum and vigor while the sound grows in size and vitality leading to an instrumental break that is full of aggression. Led by a sharp and bluesy guitar, the band electrifies its way through this musical section into the next. They return to the peasant poppy melody that we have become familiar with while the vocals add an emotive quality, giving the song a personal touch and unique style. The entire album is full of expressive songwriting delivered with enthusiastic vitality and a complex blend of musical flavors.
