Rod Gilstrap is a contemporary country singer/songwriter from Mud Lake, Idaho. In June of 2016, Rod released the 6-track album “Way out West”. “Growing up in a small Idaho town was a big influence on myself as well as my music. Enjoying the great outdoors and good times with friends and family is what living “Way out West” is truly all about.” Rod has built a following with his honest and heartfelt music as well as sharing the stage with the likes of Mark Chestnut, Billy Dean, Jack Russel, White Lion, .38 special, Great White and more. In November 2018, Gilstrap released his second album in 3 years titled, “Cavalier”. The 8-track album opens up with the track “Small Town Boy”.
“Small Town Boy” begins with and emotional melody led by an acoustic guitar. The lyrics describe life experiences of a young man growing up in a simple time, describing the spirit and atmosphere of small town America. The story is spread out over the steady rhythm and emotive vibe of the song, vocal harmonies give a larger life to the chorus as they sing the sweet anthem over a beautiful tune. The message is that you can never change the effect these formative experiences have on creating who your are, and the importance of keeping these parts of your character no matter where you go. Rod’s story is personal to his own life, but he delivers it in a away that anyone can relate to with heartfelt passion and a wistful observation of the world around him. “Cavalier” is full of authentic and poignant tracks like this.
