Monique Barry is a singer/songwriter from Toronto, Ontario. Along with being regarded as one of the pioneers in the Toronto independent music scene, Monique has worked on a wide variety of projects including providing the score for Jonah Greisman’s film Recital in 2016. She also collaborated with Alex Mine in scoring the 2009 Colin Carter documentary Fight for the Planet and was a guest producer on the Arlene Bishop CD Twenty Four is Twelve Twice or Twenty Four in 2011. She teaches music as well, and has her own line of skin care products, Aunt Bird’s All-Natural Skin Care. In July 2018 we reviewed her single “New Eyes”, and now Monique is back with the release of her 5thsingle “Dance” from her upcoming album “HAAK”.
“Dance” begins with a simple one hit percussive loop while her angelic and slightly eerie vocals set the tone. More and more instruments and layers are added steadily filling out the sound as it hits an emotional peak while her vocals brush across the soundscape with melodic fragments. The music is sonically experimental in sounds, creating a vibrant world that smoothly bounces back and forth between rhythmic and trance-like to peaceful and heavenly. The tight, mathematical layering of the verses tastefully builds tension until the soulful eruption of the chorus brings the vibe to a tranquil and moving peak. The song ends with dreamy fragments of voices and soft tones, gentling guiding you down to a peaceful landing. Also making musical waves on “Dance” are some of Monique’s most trusted and vibrant collaborators: Marc Meriläinen on guitar, Alisdair Jones on bass, Emma Campbell on vocals, Michael Phillip Wojewoda, co-producer, drums and mix, with mastering by João Carvalho.
