JP Ruggieri is a Connecticut born singer/songwriter currently based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up with a severe stutter, Ruggieri found that could use music to communicate and express himself. “While speaking was a constant struggle, I learned at an early age that we stutterers have this wonderful ability to sing in perfect fluency. As a result, the only way I felt like I could truly say what I wanted to was through writing songs and singing them.” After writing his first song at the age of 9, JP continued to expand his guitar skills, leding him to study at the Berklee College of Music, eventually moving to New York City after graduating and becoming a fixture of the singer/songwriter scene. While taking time to re-focus, JP quickly became a first-call player in the New York scene, as well as a sought after session musician; recording guitar and pedal steel for artists such as Penny & Sparrow, Jarrod Dickenson (Decca Records) and Rainee Blake (Nashville TV Series). That period of growth took 7 years, and the result is Ruggieri’s latest release, “Waiting On You”.
The 8-song album begins with the title track, “Waiting On You”. The track begins with a bluesy guitar that sets the tone before thick vocal harmonies deliver the main hook. The song has a steady back beat and funky rhythm that perfectly compliments its emotive and quirky style. The chords have a classic soul structure and upbeat poppy style; the each instrument is played with a comfortable looseness while working together to create one giant, solid sound. A razor sharp slide guitar sprinkles in a southern rock vibe while the sonic landscape is filled by gospel inspired organs and layers of vocal harmonies. Ruggieri uses his lyrics to tell a personal story, full of playful metaphors about an endearing and love-struck protagonist who has gotten used to waiting. “Waiting On You”, is a concise and stunning record, packed with unique songwriting, tight grooves, and the kind of tasteful musicianship that can’t be faked.
