Jay Stones – “Natural”

Jay Stones is an emerging Alternative R&B singer-songwriter based out of Los Angeles. Stones began making music when he was 13 years old, and was heavily inspired by 80s artists like Michael Jackson and Tears For Fears. Stones released his first mixtape “Rocket Fuel” in 2010, and collaborated on various music projects with Mellow Vibes, Yaeji, and currently The Lost Boys on an upcoming album titled“Wicked Paradise”. It was during this time that Stones released his first EP, “7″, which was the stepping-stone that led to him working with Hollywood producer Kidäskyblue and New York rapper Jah X on his most recent effort, “Natural”, released in March 2020.

“Natural” is introduced with the track “It’s Just a Ride”, a dreamy, trippy groove that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Jay’s original style is immediately known, smooth, soulful, funky and a little ominous. The next song “Slow Motion” brings the energy up with a steady dance beat that harkens back to classic soul-pop, but now it’s layered with spacey synthesizers and a jazzy chord structure. Stones’ voice is passionate while remaining mellow, incredibly smooth while still having a bit of an edge. The music is patient and just keeps grooving in the soothing rhythm they created. “Ketamine” takes a turn for the dramatic, filling the sound with dark tones and eerie instrumentals. It sounds like the romantic soundtrack to a classic movie. The vocals playing around with different dynamics, calling and responding creating a character within the track. “Dreams” has a lo-fi hip hop style, with old school samples and a relaxing Wurlitzer piano. The drums have an interesting and unexpected beat, a jazzy rhythm while still having a powerful bass and clap of hip-hop. “Answer Love” has major Prince influences, “Rich Bitch” is a mellow club girl anthem, and “Egyptian Woman” is a space age dance number. The entire album is full of moody and sensual lyrics, undeniable grooves and a powerful, dreamy atmosphere. You can listen to “Natural” and follow Jay Stones on the links below.
